Durham’s cathedral is considered to be one of the finest examples of a Norman cathedral anywhere in Europe and since 1986 has been an UNESCO designated World Heritage Site along with neighbouring Durham Castle.
It was founded in 1093 to house the shrine of St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, the seventh-century holy man who is renowned as the North’s best-loved saint. It is also home to other important relics including the head of St Oswald of Northumbria and the remains of the Venerable Bede — little wonder then, that the cathedral remains a place of pilgrimage, as well as being a place of Christian worship and the seat of the Bishop of Durham.
